PROJECT REPORT: JANUARY.2004
Dear Capsule Project participants:

Thank you very much for taking part in the Capsule Project. We were thrilled to get so many character designs and such a great variety of unique ideas. At the end of November we had our first meeting with the manufacturer, Yujin. We presented all the concepts and with them, and after serious debate, selected 2 designs to be manufactured. While molds are being made at the Yujin factory over the next 3 or 4 months we will be developing a strategy to sell them. All the latest information on the project will be posted on the Zakka website and at the store. Trends in the Japanese market change rapidly. We are working on a marketing concept that will position these products away from the short boom of some Japanese trends. We will maintain reasonable prices, and with your high quality designs and unique ideas we should have an excellent product. We will continue to research the needs of this product category, and continue to accept applications of your great ideas at anytime. We greatly appreciate your participation in this Zakka project.
* The vending machines have installed at Zakka.
Please come visit Zakka and check out the capsule machine. When you have an idea to put in a capsule,
some machines and empty capsules are also available to your art works. We suggest the retail price of an each capsule should be around $5.00. Please visit Zakka to show your idea!
BACKGROUND
Lately, Japanese 'gumball machine' industry is expanding rapidly, allegedly raising more than 250 million dollars in gross revenue. Sure, Japan has been known for their sometimes bizarre but successful inventions and businesses for more than a couple of decades by now. But how has the good ole' gumball machine become a multimillion-dollar business? There seems to be some logic. First of all, there's the reasonable price. Each machine is usually set to a range of $1 to $3. Secondly, it is a self-service machine that requires no attendant, so no personnel expense is needed. As a result, the machine appeals to any store or venue that is looking to add a little flare to its business. At the same time, many new products are being made to be sold through this increasingly popular vending machine. Now we can find 3D comic characters and artist-designed toys.

This time, we're planning an event called "What's in the Capsule?" at Zakka inNew York and Tokyo. Send in your ideas for possible products to be sold in those small capsules! Best designs and ideas may have a chance to be released as actual products from the major capsule toy company YUJIN.
